Sorry to comment here so long after it was written, but it was just a post that was very relevant to me (I normally never comment on things). Anyway, I was living in Moscow for just over three months. And I hate to admit that I never gave. Never. And I felt bad about it then and I feel bad about it now... I don't know. In England, I will give, not money but a hot drink or something. But that's more the 'culture' of begging that I know in England it's quite easy to offer people that. In Moscow I didn't feel I could do that and it would be accepted and I didn't know what to do and so ended up doing nothing. It's like that quote never to do nothing for fear of doing too little. I knew I was falling into a trap and still did nothing about it. Do you still give? How is it? Also, on a practical and horrible level (I think I'm scared of the answer), you know the women in the metro with hospital certificates for their kids etc, are they real?
Also, I know what you mean, every now and then I would see people giving and it would really touch me. But, when I say that, unlike you, I still didn't give myself...
