Beautiful article. True and heartwarming. It's for this reason that, if God ever blesses us with a Down Syndrome child, I know he will be a force for good in our family. Our Aspie son can be a challenge, but he constantly amazes me. I wouldn't change him--not even to avoid the Aspie-level meltdowns and the control-freakiness. He's a gift. So are his little sisters, who have been learning as they grow how to adjust to his Aspie quirks and to appreciate the good stuff (and there's a lot of that). Our middle child, Claire, is particularly sensitive to what bugs him, and, while I know she gets frustrated with him, she's our little peacemaker, and she helps her older brother and her younger sister get along better. Livi is our fearless little clown, and sometimes she and Michael clash, but, in the next moment, they'll be giving each other a hug and saying, "I love you," and that alone is well-worth the meltdowns (which become a distant memory).
Michael received his First Communion a few weeks ago, and yesterday, an aunt of his gave him a small statue of the Blessed Mother. He gave her a kiss and softly said, "I love you, Mary," which almost choked up his aunt. She told me about it, and even now, I melt when I think about it.
Anyway, thanks for the article!
